Search off the coast

Thursday, February 1st, 2007

Today I spent 3 hours between Pt Reyes and Ano Nuevo between the coast and international waters in a twin engine airplane.  We ran a pattern centered between the Farallons and the Gate.  We also ran a back and forth pattern from Half Moon Bay and Ano Nuevo.  The area between Farallons and the Gate is relatively busy with fishing, cargo and some pleasure boats.  Further south things are less busy.  We are at 1000 feet and moving about 3 miles/minute. We had a few sightings of single pieces of debris.    One redish one near Stinson Beach was reported to the Coast Guard. They had already examined it. The ocean appears surprisingly clear of debris.  I expected to see more things floating around.  We spotted one sail boat under power.  Clearly not the Tenacious.

The Coast Guard was also in the area and we tried to stay away from where their patterns were.  Regradless, I think this area has been well covered.  Further searches should be farther north and south.  Or possibly further out in the ocean.  It is hard to believe that there is anything missed in the area outside the gate.  There is much traffic there.

Customs radar plane

Thursday, February 1st, 2007

I spoke to the duty officer at Customs Late this morning. They have a Cessna Citation in San Diego with targeting radar and a FLIR. The plane with a crew experienced with finding small boats should be in the air now searching between point Morro and San Diego.

Thanks to Robert Yoha of the California Department of Conservation for the heads up on the availability of this important asset.
